Do we long for eternity? If heaven is just an escape for hell, we will never long for it. Is heaven real enough for us so that in the face of death we can rejoice? We are not talking about a poor substitute for life here on earth, but a place where we will experience more love and joy than we have ever known. This is the place where our love for God will finally be perfected. We are practicing here on earth what will take place for all eternity. This is why a life worth living is one in which we love God and our neighbor.

If you were asked what the purpose your life is, what would you say? If someone were to answer that question on your behalf based solely upon what they saw looking at your calendar and your bank statement, what would they say about us? Looking at where a hundred people spend their time and money we might come up to many different conclusions about what the purpose of life is, but there really is one correct answer. The purpose of our lives is not to gratify ourselves, but to glorify God. We can do that best through pursuing Christian mission.

When Jesus went to the cross for us, He didn’t hold anything back. His compassion and mercy flowed out to us as did the blood from his head, hands, feet and side. Now He wants us to respond with wholehearted commitment and compassion ourselves.

Having established what the crowds thought about Him, Jesus confronts the disciples with their own belief. Who do they say Jesus is?
Jesus wants each of us to establish who He is in our own hearts. What we believe about Jesus will determine whether we will gain what we cannot lose.

The disciples didn’t have much – just two fish and five loves, but when they laid their small offering at the feet of Jesus, He multiplied it to feed thousands of people. When we bring the limited resources that we have to Jesus for the work of the Kingdom, He multiplies it to meet the need for the tasks He has given us.

The Bible speaks of two spiritual paths. For all of us, there are really only two choices. There is the path that leads to a fruitful life or the path that leads to disaster. As we live our lives day by day, our choices often seem to carry no consequences. The reality is that our daily choices actually matter very much. The question before each of us today is, “Do we know which path we are on? Is it the path of a fruitful life, or the path of disaster?” Today we are starting a seven week series called, A life worth living, walking in the footsteps of Jesus. A life worth living is one that takes the right path; the path of Jesus Christ.
